Responding to the International Society of Typographic Designer’s (ISTD) Open|Close brief that asked for a redesign of the first and last chapter of a novel. My response was a redesign of Evelyn Waugh’s ‘Vile Bodies’ that delves into post-war resurgence and extravagance. Typographically, each page serves as a standalone story yet seamlessly weaves into the overarching story. Using space for impact, I aimed to capture the essence of Waugh’s experimental prose, while illustrating class tensions of the 1930s. The design challenges conventional storytelling, employing typography and grid structures to mirror societal hierarchies and personal journeys. The colour scheme, anchored by 1930s ‘shocking pink’, evolves from loose and experimental to rigid, reflecting a shift from opulence to mundanity. Incorporating Work Sans and Futura fonts, the design pays homage to its era while remaining contemporary.
